Hanazawa Kana makes a terrible Nagi.

This is one of the specials on Kannagi DVD 4, where Tomatsu Haruka and Hanazawa Kana swapped roles for the store room scene. Tomacchan proved a perfectly serviceable Zange-chan but Kana on the other hand, struggled. She sounded more like a teenage boy, if anything – Kana’s moe ‘voice type’ is totally, totally wrong for a (mostly) obnoxious character like Nagi. Though I had a feeling she wasn’t making too much of an effort of it – her timing was off, she stumbled over some words and always sounded like she was on the verge of bursting into laughter. Would love to see Tomacchan attempt Tsugumi as well, to hear what sort of voice she brings out.

  1. Hanazawa Kana totally surprised me by playing Zange so sadistically in the first place, but Tomatsu totally managed to capture that aspect as well. (Why does it seem like playing an evil role comes second nature to both of them despite their looks?) Hanazawa’s Nagi just sucked -_-“

  2. Wow Tomacchan really does a great Zange.

On a side note, j1m0ne have you seen that clip of Kakkihara speaking German on niconico? I knew he was born there but never knew he could speak it so well!

  3. dah! Tomatsu Haruka did a great job… I second what issa-sa said about Hanazawa Kana, I didn’t expect her to be able to place Zange in the first place, but I personally thought Haruka was pretty darn good too. Pretty talented for someone so young. ^^

  4. I wonder who’s more versatile… Miyuki Sawashiro or Haruka Tomatsu, since Tomatsu seems to be pretty versatile.

Miyukichi is god. Unless Tomatsu can pull off the young boy voice, I’ll think of her as a higher pitched Inoue Marina or something. The great thing about saying it this way is that they both have nice legs, but at least Inoue Marina can sing.

While I generally don’t like to type cast, Hanazawa Kana is one of the very few who I cannot see doing a not so cutesy role – Yeah, I loathed her voice as Zange and ended up disliking the actual character a little more because of it. But who knows. I was surprised hearing Kaneda Tomoko as Mike in Sketchbook ~full color’s~ after hearing her being obnoxious characters like Chiyo, Aoi and Nel, so maybe Hanazawa can do the same. She’s still fairly new.

…. On second thought, I don’t care much for Hanazawa and would rather have more Makino Yui.

Tomatsu as a higher pitched Inoue Marina is probably not the greatest comparison since they don’t really cover the same type of ground. Tomacchan can do cute/moe/young girl-voices which Marina most definitely cannot do even if her life depended on it, while Marina can do the lower, boyish type characters which Haruka has yet to touch. So they’re both good in their own way, at different things.

I would prefer to compare Marina to somebody like Kuwashima Houko & Tomatsu… Orikasa Fumiko? The latter may be a bit of a stretch at the moment, but certainly Tomatsu has shown that she’s a got a good range and selection of voices that she can pull out of her bag of tricks and pull off effectively, like Fumiko (who doesn’t excel at male voices either).

  7. Higher pitched was probably the wrong way to describe it. I can visualize it in my head, I just can’t seem to describe it properly, though you pretty much said what I tried to – I feel that Marina and Tomacchan are equally good at the “middle ground” of female voicing, normal aged/sounding girls. It’s just Marina can do the lower end of the spectrum, the young boy voices, while Tomacchan can go higher up to do the moe/loli/girly voices.

I actually thought of Kawasumi Ayako at first for a Tomacchan comparison, but I think that’s only because their singing makes me feel slightly nauseous and I usually don’t care for most of the characters they play. Kuwashima and Marina is an interesting comparison. I keep thinking of Ito Shizuka or Uryocchi lately.
